One of the best things about Sound Design is just trying a bunch of random tricks, and seeing what you achieve as a starting point to work with. I find convolution reverb to be a perfect starting point to get unusual sounds. Most people are well aware that convolution reverb is fantastic for putting your sounds in realistic, authentic spaces. You might not be aware that you can use any weird WAV file as an impulse response in a convolution reverb like Native Instruments' Reflektor. Even bringing full tracks into Reflektor can give you a completely unexpected starting point for a unique sound design idea.
